He would have willingly taken more interest in the magazine, for he enjoyed helping Dubreuilh gather articles and make selections. But it was always the same refrain: he needed time to go through the manuscripts, to write to the authors, to talk things over with them. And that was out of the question; he had to limit himself to skimming hastily through anonymous writings. 'I skimp everything,' he thought, sitting down behind the wheel of the little black car. 'I can't even take time out to do justice to a beautiful day like this. In the end I'll just hurry through my whole life.'
