By standardizing and sharing such information, we can avoid reproducing work (and mistakes) already made in the past. This is a life-­or-­death matter for many people, not something that ought to be sacrificed to preserve a competitive advantage for proprietary companies. Such information could be held in a public trust, managed by a committee with democratic oversight, with the capacity to set rules as to how access to this information is granted.
